Is it a good or bad thing to go through a credit counseling service to help relieve extreme debt?
Probably yes. Is it a non-profit? Do they want you to pay them? Have you checked the better business bureau? Anyone you know used them? Any testimonials?
Are you willing to sacrifice to pay off whatever settlement rates are achieved. If so, you should go. A legitimate agency will help you work with creditors and counsel you on how not to get into that situation again.
Warning – the first thing they are going to do is cut up every credit card you have – every one!
