how does wage garnishment affect my credit score?

I already have a Consumer Credit Counseling situation related to a vehicle that I co-signed on with my son. The vehicle was repossessed and I now pay 275.00 a month for the payment on the vehicle. I want to purchase a home within two years and I’m desperately trying to clean up my credit. Now I have a problem with an apartment complex that I broke a lease with. They want me to pay almost 3,000.00 for various claims about leaving the apartment in disarray (unclean, etc.) Some of their claims are not true–I believe they just want to intimidate me into paying a lot of money, and they are assuming I won’t disagree or fight it out. I’ve tried talking to the collection agency but all they do is threaten me and they will not just talk to me and let me try to work it out with them.

A wage garnishment is a result of a court action and it will appear on your credit report for seven years as a “public record.” It will negatviely effect your credit score.
